LG G5

I’ve used my Samsung Galaxy S4 for a very long time because

  1. Have to have a removable battery
  2. Have to have an SD Card

There have been phones that meet these requirements already but none of them really got me excited to be worth the cost of phones today.

In comes the G5. What I THOUGHT was that the G4 would now be cheaper. Alas no, but Best Buy had $99 pre-orders for them so, OK, for that price, we can get new phones. So I did.

Memory, it has 32G internal which is twice what many other phones come with to start, but also supports up to 2TB external cards. I currently use a 128G card for music and other stuff. Can’t live without it.

Initial thoughts – Wow, smooth. Although not a huge fan of no app drawer, I can live with it (makes icons on the desktop for everything regardless. Most end up in the new ‘Trash’ folder so I don’t have to look at them).

The camera, even with the screen locked. Tap the down volume twice, insta-cam. Hit it again, insta-picture. SO nice and fast. As for low-light, I hear complaints but I can’t figure out WHAT these people are talking about. I was sitting in the kid’s room one night, lights out, total darkness. I woundered, picked up the phone and hit the button. Quick flash and checked the camera. Resulting picture looks WONDERFUL!

And the wide-angle lense. OMG that is so useful! Especially for close-up shots! Nothing else comes close right now!

So, phenomenal and fast camera, what about the screen? Well, the new Galaxies have OLED Screens which are notorious for burn-in. For that reason LG stuck with the LED screen. Especially for the always-on display, LOVE IT!

Battery? IT lasts all day even with my heavy use. But there’s more! I have TWO batteries! But there’s MORE!!! It also has Quick Charge 3.0! Galaxies do not have this at all. I can fully charge the phone from dead to full in UNDER AN HOUR! So, I have multiple batteries (say I’m at a show taking endless pictures/videos) and I can fully recharge it in under an hour! I have a non-stop battery if I have a place to plug in the external charger for the battery not in the phone! That is just sweet. A tear is rolling down my cheek. And I have a QuickCharge 3 charger in the car so even there I can easily get almost fully charged on my way home from work. I have no battery concerns here. And in a few years when the battery is tired, swap it for a new one.

The charging port – USB-C. I LOVE IT. Those people crying “Everything I have is MicroUSB-B” are not thinking it through. The phone also comes with an adapter for uUSB-B to USB-C so every cable you still have is usable (although may not fast-charge, but I found tons of those for under $1/foot and have a 10′ one that works beautifully). Plus, in the dark, just slam it in. Doesn’t matter which way. Sorry, but uUSB-B is going away anyhow. Might as well get with it now. Kudos for that. Most of the best products are using it now too, just not Samsung (their loss for that and no Quick Charge 3) with the Galaxy S7 series.

Everything else? I have WiFi calling… AND it works in airplane mode (very new and rare) How about LEGALLY making phone calls on a flight? Ya… Or deep in a hospital where no phones can reach outside where, unfortunately I am always all too often? Connect to the WiFi, no problem. Call away.

Onto the Fingerprint Scanner. I hear people saying it’s complicated and hard to operate… WHAT? If you set it up properly… I can’t move my hands really well and I can grab the phone with my left hand, slide my index finger over the button and bingo. In two weeks, I haven’t had any problem using the phone constantly (new toy syndrome). And you don’t have to look and hunt-poke on the screen for some specific area, etc. It works wonderfully.

The default video player also plays all of my MKV files with AC3 audio. Unlike older phones. No more need for MX Player (although it is still nice).

My only current issue, Helium worked on one of them, not the other. Haven’t figured that out yet. Also, the video player turns off the auto dimmer after a short time. Very annoying to me. That’s about it for now.

Otherwise, I’d give it a nearly perfect score.. Out of 10 stars 9 or even 9.5. (default battery could be bigger, that’s about my only current thought and as aforementioned, almost a non issue anyhow).

Hard Water Stains

On my bran new Anderson windows… /cry!!!

I tried the simple vinegar solution, etc. No joy. A company called Anderson and said they could scrape them clean. I about freaked since that’s what everything says not to do. But I’d rather let a professional try then fool around and mess them up myself. At least they are insured and know what they are doing.

New Roof

New roof comes Wednesday! Yeay! Sometimes insurance works. Plus having good insurance helped. So far, I love Hochheim Prarie! So far. Although, hopefully people never have to USE their insurance per-say, but when it happens like this particular issue I had with the roof, that’s about the best ever insurance use you can have I think.

Blog Software Migration

I’m changing the blog software from Nucleus 3.65 to WordPress 4.3.1, including some migration to the new system which doesn’t exist. For those also wondering,

  • To begin, I did the most basic of WordPress 4.3.1 installs from scratch.
  • After that I did an export of theĀ  nucleus_item table from the nucleus database.
  • I imported that table into the wordpress database.
  • I then trashed and deleted the demo post and demo page so that there was nothing in the wp_posts table.
  • Then I ran this script:
INSERT INTO wp_posts
(ID, post_author, post_date, post_content, post_title, post_status)
SELECT `inumber`, 1, `itime`, concat(`ibody`, `imore`), `ititle`,
CASE WHEN idraft = 1 THEN 'draft' ELSE 'publish' END
FROM nucleus_item
  • Then I added each category manually using the tool. I only had 3.
  • Then I ran this script:
INSERT INTO `wp_term_relationships` (`object_id`, `term_taxonomy_id`)
SELECT `inumber`,`icat`
FROM `nucleus_item`
  • But I wasn’t smart enough to make the same groups in the right order, and my uncategorized was id 3 and not 1 in the old system. Easy fix.
  • Figure out which number needs to be which ID in the actual table. It’s pretty simple to do. Since you have a competing value to start, one will have to turn to something unused first so this is what I did simply… Set 1’s to 5’s, then 3’s to 1’s and then 5’s to 3’s. Like so:
UPDATE `wp_term_relationships` SET `term_taxonomy_id`=5
WHERE `term_taxonomy_id`=1

UPDATE `wp_term_relationships` SET `term_taxonomy_id`=1
WHERE `term_taxonomy_id`=3

UPDATE `wp_term_relationships` SET `term_taxonomy_id`=3
WHERE `term_taxonomy_id`=5
  • And finish your settings
  • For this, I had to make permalinks the ‘default’ without going through and making other link information in the tables also. This is a simple enough solution

And it’s that simple. If I wanted comments, etc. it would be a few more steps but I think you know can get the idea. Overall, it took me about 10 minutes for the whole blog. Comments would have been another 20-30 if I wanted to also move accounts and such or just put them all in one ‘oldsystem’ account. Lots of options.

AND… If you screw it up, just start over. We never touched the original Nucleus database accept to export the table (or tables if doing more). Either way you’re off the orphaned software and onto something more widely supported (hopefully for good. Don’t want to do this again.)

Why do I stay away from the big AAA game producers like EA?

http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/212245-ea-executive-calls-on-disc-dlc-complaints-nonsense-but-the-truth-is-more-complex

Here is a prime example. I’m not feeding the $ grubbers anymore to play a game. Too many good independents and even a few AAAs left to give you good products completely at release and DLC is just that, more content, not finishing the content you needed.

Sick of the US Media Crybabies

OMG, what a load of shit:

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2014/09/11/cbs-cancels-navy-parachute-team-nfl-performance/

Basically, it says CBS shit-canned the NAVY Seal parachuting into the Pittsburgh/Baltimore game on 9/11. The reason they used; safety cabling, some BS about they run more cabling with CBS. There are so many reasons that’s BS… Simple investigation of how it all works and who’s responsible for all that explains it all. The facility, not the TV stations.

Anyhow, the real reason from the Military insiders; CBS refused to air it because it might offend some Muslims. So @#$%ing what. It’s the US Military, parachuting in with a flag, as they do in EVERY OTHER EVENT, on the anniversary of one of the worst events in our history that led to war.

CBS, Fuck You! Obama cock-holders…

TWC/Comcast Upgrading the internet… BUT…

“Here is the entirety of the question: 40M per channel, 6141 has 8 channels down, 4 up, 6183 has 16 down, 4 up. Both of these should EASILY be able to do even the 300 ultimate plans but you list the 6141 stopping at 100m. Even the 6121 should easily be able to do the 100M plan”

Transfer after transfer… No one has a clue… Then they closed the window on me following the transcription on the bottom. Thank goodness I was copying and pasting into here as I went along.OK, So TWC is upgrading their internet service. Nice. However, My Motorola SB6141 modem which can handle 40M per channel and is an 8 channel down and 4 channel up modem, isn’t capable of their higher tier services. To do that you HAVE to have the SB6183 (16/4). Their services only go up to 300M down and 20M up… so I’m failing to see the issues here…

Let’s go over the transcripts shall we?

Christopher_: Can you see the original question?

Ryan Edwards: Please give me two minutes to go through previous conversation.

Ryan Edwards: Thank you for your time and patience.

Ryan Edwards: I have check that you want to know about the SB6141 is compatible with TWC new upgrade or not, right?

Christopher_: According to your PDF, it’s not…

Christopher_: I’m just looking for an explanation why

Ryan Edwards: Okay.

Christopher_: It should be capable of wall over 300M down and 100M up

Ryan Edwards: Allow me couple of minutes to check the details.

Christopher_: well*

Ryan Edwards: Thank you for your time and patience.

Ryan Edwards: I have check that as the SB6141 is compatible Up to Ultimate 100

Christopher_: Ya, but it should be easily up to the others also

Ryan Edwards: That is the only reason it’s not available in the list.

Christopher_: The 6121 should be up to the 100 plan even

Christopher_: what is the reason?

Ryan Edwards: No Christopher, SB6121 is Non-Compliant means it is compatible with the highest speeds.

Christopher_: Highest speeds yes

Christopher_: But it is capable of handling 160M down and up so why is it not on the 100/10 plan?

Christopher_: And the 6141, that I have, is not on the 200/20 plan when it is easily capable of 320M down and 160M up

Ryan Edwards: I can understand your concern Christopher but SB6141 is compatible upto 100 and SB6121 is compatible for 300 plan.

Christopher_: The 6141 is an 8 channel down, 4 channel up modem. it is capable of 40M per channel.

Christopher_: The 6183 is a 16channel down, still only 4 channel up modem…

Christopher_: Also still only 40M per channel

Christopher_: Also still only 40M per channel

Carter: Thank you for waiting. I appreciate your patience.

Christopher_: yup

Carter: You have received a notification about the speed increase, right?

Christopher_: yes, obviously, that’s why I’m curious about the limit in hardware

Carter: I understand that.

Carter: I have checked your account details and see that, you have Extreme and your own Docsis 3.0 modem on your account.

Christopher_: The SB6141, 8 channel down, 4 channel up model. Yes

Carter: Extreme has the regular speed of 30×5 and new speed will be 200×20.

Christopher_: Extreme never hits 30/5 but yes

Carter: One of the risks associated with purchasing your own modem is that it may become obsolete and/or unable to support new features or speeds that may be introduced in the future.

Christopher_: THAT is what this question is all about. This modem is capable of 40M per channel which is 320M download and 160M upload combined..

Carter: Leasing a modem from TWC ensures that you have the appropriate equipment to take advantage of your Internet service level.

Carter: It also provides you with 24/7 support, free trouble calls and required replacements and upgrades.

Christopher_: Stop trying to sell me something and give me a simple answer

Christopher_: And no it doesn’t, it provides you with ‘We will get to it sometime next week’ answer..

Christopher_: Plus, at $10/month, you can pay for your own modem in just a few months.

Christopher_: My question is EXTREMELY simple; Why the limit? It seems you can only do ~ 5M up per channel, that seems obvious by the 4 channel of all the modems and the 20M up limit

Christopher_: What’s going on with the down?

Carter: I will give you the details of all the plans with new speeds.

Carter: ELP current speed 2 X 1 and new speed is 3 x 1.

Carter: Basic old 3×1 new 10×1.

Carter: Standard old 15×1 new 50×5.

Carter: Turbo old 20×2 new 100×10.

Christopher_: I know the basic details of the plans and the speeds they offer. I want to know the technical issues with how much download speed per channel is TWC/Comcast limiting the system to, to why rated modems aren’t working to their capabilities… You are giving me what they choose to up speeds to.

Carter: Extreme old 30×5 new 200×20.

Carter: Ultimate old 50×5 new 300X20 .

Christopher_: yes… all of that information was on:

Christopher_: http://www.timewarnercable.com/content/dam/residential/images/Enjoy/speed-increase/speed-plan-chart-2014.jpg

Carter: Just to confirm, currently you are not getting the upload speed of 5 mbps, right?

Christopher_: Never have. The BEST I ever see is 3 and change

Christopher_: Not to mention horrible ping rates when the network traffic is doing ANYTHING at all, and macro-blocking on the TV.

Christopher_: Even the TWC repair guy here said the ‘node’ on Brandi circle is the problem but they can’t get anyone to fix it cause ‘they’ don’t see the problem even though HE can show it to them over and over.

Christopher_: Even the TWC repair guy here said the ‘node’ on Brandi circle is the problem but they can’t get anyone to fix it cause ‘they’ don’t see the problem even though HE can show it to them over and over.

Christopher_: but that’s not actually the reason I’m on today. I just want to know what is the limit of the download per channel of the ‘new’ system… And why it’s so limited.

Christopher_: but that’s not actually the reason I’m on today. I just want to know what is the limit of the download per channel of the ‘new’ system… And why it’s so limited.

Christopher_: And what’s with the double-postings again?

Christopher_: Nevermind on that, I just would love an answer to my simple question.

Carter: You will need to contact our local office for further details about the speeds and limits.

Christopher_: You could even lie and say ‘Due to limitations on the trunk line, we’re forced to limit the per-channel speeds on download to 20M per channel…’

Christopher_: You could even lie and say ‘Due to limitations on the trunk line, we’re forced to limit the per-channel speeds on download to 20M per channel…’

According to Otto from the following phone call I sent. The SB6141 should be just fine after much conversations and checking with management, etc.

Another Croup (Croop) night…

These seem to be happening all the damn time now. Constantine had it a few weeks ago, now Seeley has it. Too long for it to be the same one. They shared it a few months ago. I tell ya I get tired of waking up to severely wheezing children and running them to the hospital, but at least I do wake up and not sleep through it… I do thank God for my hyper-active ears at least.

The world > 60Hz!!!

I get a lot of people going with the ‘You can not see more then 60Hz’ comment they throw out. Infact almost everyone can, but it’s how we see it.

To perceive motion through still pictures, it takes ~ 25 frames per second (FPS). This is what even Blu-Ray movies are encoded with. Our average computer monitors lock to 60Hz which in turn limits the maximum to 60FPS.

If you do anything over HDMI, you also only see 60FPS, however internals in the display unit can make things appear smoother then they are. LGs are especially nice to do this with their 240Hz units in my experience. So what does this mean to the average Joe? Nothing. A lot of people don’t see it nore care. However there are some of us that can easily see it but use it either way and the extreme few of us like myself who can actually be caused pain by the slow display of old.

In the living room we have a 120Hz Vizio. Obviously it still only gets the ~25 frame signal and tries to do it’s own internal ‘smoothing’ to make it more fluid to the user. Works so-so. The LG we have in the bedroom works beautifully on that note.

But what do ‘I’ see? My whole life I wondered why people tolerated the horribly ‘strobey’ world. All of the fluorescent lights in the US have a 60Hz light frequency, so as you might see them as a solid light, I see them as a fast strobe light. It’s just how they work. I HATE them. And they are still everywhere.

My home has converted over to high-speed LED lighting and it helps me a ton. Old-school incandescent lights can be OK depending on what they are exactly but also tend to be the wrong color for myself. I prefer the daylight spectrum so I can see colors more accurately (which is ironic when I have blue/green issues anyhow).

ANYHOW; back to the monitors… So people want super-fast stuff and other people argue that you can’t “SEE” it… Parts are both right. Your brain might only be able to identify ~ 60 FPS individually, but it’s HOW your brain puts them together that makes all the difference. If you speed up the input and let your brain pick the frames it is most comfortable with, I think it is happier and less stressed as in my situation. However if you force your chosen 60 on it, some, maybe many, people won’t notice but it becomes an issue for the sensitive.

Plus, I’ve had these same people over to my house on my computer which is actually setup for 144Hz live use. They watch me spin up some game (my system can do just about any of them at this speed) and the response is always ‘OMG!’. I’ve never had anyone say it just looks like everything else. Even just grabbing a window and doing a circle, it’s so smooth. The simplest things become almost fluid.

FOR ME, this means no more migraines. On the monitor I stare at all day/night long in most cases, now I can without extra pills and sleeps to make the headaches that put me in bed for DAYS go away.

However, this is my special corner of the world… And even I have a few 60Hz monitors in the house. I.E. my phone, etc. Some of them do use internal smoothing techniques to help. My Galaxy S4 isn’t as bad as I thought it might be which is great. But I still can’t stare it it endlessly with moving video on it.

On my desk I have my 144Hz ASUS monitor front and center, and two support monitors for my servers off to the side. Both of those are used more rarely. I’ll play a movie on one while I work but I’m really listening to it and it’s brightness is so detuned as to barely leave any glow at all or the flicker itself would get to me. It’s just what I had at the time and now too broke to do any better.

THE OTHER GOTCHA!!!

GPUs aren’t > 60Hz friendly. I recently went through TWO 7970’s and gave them away after the fact as my giveaways (when I had money) and they never could handle the faster refresh rates without a full-on snow effect on the monitor.

I went with my now GTX 690 (was a pair of Titans but needed the $ so sold them off and went backwards a bit) and it does everything great accept Windows Media Center (which Nvidia is currently investigating!).

But the end results are games that are so smooth… Videos that are nice using smoothing software to fill in the frames like some newer display units do, etc. Which is still why I listen to more movies then I watch anymore as this is getting worse with age.

WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE:

Even the extremists in the world agree that the 120Hz (actually the 85Hz range) is the sweet spot for the no-pain barrier even in people like myself. If somehow all of this could just be pushed up the tiniest bit it would be so much better. People with old CRT monitors can remember the smooth benefits of going from 60Hz to even just 75Hz. Just overall nicer, more pleasant experience. If we pushed the standard up to 100 or 120 or even just 85, I think people would suddenly feel more comfortable and not even realize why.
